GLOSSARY OF VAPING TERMS

A

Atomizer

The electronic component that turns e-liquid into vapor when heated.


Analog

A traditional tobacco cigarette.


Adapter

The piece that connects the battery (mod) and the tank (atomizer).


Advanced Personal Vape (APV)

A more sophisticated vaping device.


Air Flow Control (AFC)

A small controller that adjusts the drag.


Airflow

The amount of air inhaled into an atomizer or tank.


Automatic Mode

The battery automatically starts heating up the atomizer when the user inhales, without pressing a button.


Automatic Shutoff

A safety feature that prevents the battery from overheating.


B

Batteries

Provide power to the device. Sometimes built-in, sometimes removable and rechargeable.


Box Mods

Usually a square or rectangular design that allows for more battery capacity, digital readouts, temperature control and more, for experienced vapors.


Bridge

The part of a disposable atomizer where the e-liquid is held.


C

Cartridge

A small mouthpiece that holds e-liquid.


Cartomizer

The atomizer and cartridge in one – they are longer than regular atomizers, hold more liquid and are disposable.


Cig-a-Like

An e-cigarette designed to look like the real thing.


Clearomiser

Holds the e-liquid in the e-cigarette (the tank). Includes mouthpiece, atomizer coil and battery connection.


Clone

A counterfeit device that copies another design.


Cloud Chasers

Vapers who enjoy creating large clouds of vapor, usually with high-powered devices.


Cloud Chasing

Producing huge volumes of vapor.


Coil

Heated metal element which turns e-liquid into vapor.


Cotton

Material used for wicking coils.


Cutoff

Limits the drag from an e-cig to prevent overheating.

DIY

Do it yourself. Can refer to devices or e-liquids.


Draw

Inhaling vapor from the mouthpiece.


Drip (Dripping)

To refill an atomizer by dripping e-liquid directly onto the coil.


Drip Tip

A mouthpiece on the tank that can be attached for dripping.


Drip Well

A bowl shape near the e-cigarette connector. Designed to prevent spilling e-liquid.


Dry Burn

Firing the atomizer without any e-liquid to burn off e-liquid residue.


Dry Hit

Occurs when there is not enough e-liquid in the tank to produce vapor.


E

E-Cigarette

A generic term for vaping devices.


E-Liquid / E-Juice

The liquid that is vaporized in vaping.


F

Filler Material

A material that absorbs and holds e-liquid.


Flavor Chasers

Vapers who seek out specialized flavors as part of their vaping experience.


Flooding

Occurs when the atomizer is overfilled with e-liquid.


H

Hybrid

A high power device where the atomizer is fitted directly to the battery.


J

Joules

A measurement of power for temperature-control mods (the higher the joules, the higher the heat)


K

Kanthal

Ideal type of wire for coils.


Kick

Aka throat hit.


L

Li-Po/Li-Ion (Lithium Polymer and Lithium Ion)

Types of batteries used in vaping devices. Lithium-based rechargeable is most commonly used.


LED (Light Emitting Diode)

Simulate the burning tip of a traditional cigarette.


Lung Hit

Direct inhalation of vapor to the lungs. Vapor is not held in mouth.


M

mAH (Milliamp Per Hour)

A measurement of battery life (higher mAH = longer life).


Mechanical Mod

Delivers power from a battery directly to the atomizer with no electronic controls.


Mini

A smaller version of a standard e-cigarette.


Mod

Generic term for advanced vaping devices (vs cig-a-likes).


Mouthpiece

The tip at the end of the device, used to inhale vapor.


Mouth-to-Lung Hit

Vapor is first held in the mouth before being inhaled into the lungs.


O

Ohm

The unit of measurement of electrical resistance.


P

PG (Propylene Glycol)

E-liquid ingredient that creates a throat hit. Also carries flavor.


Priming

Adding a few drops of liquid to saturate the wick fully before using a new atomizer.


R

Regulated Mod

E-cig battery which has a circuit board to control the current.


S

Smoke Juice

Aka e-liquid.


Smokeless Cigarette

Aka e-cigarettes


Starter Kit

A self-contained package with everything needed for vaping.


Steeping

Letting the new liquid sit in open air for the ingredients to settle.


Sweet Spot

The perfect balance of all parts of the vaping experience (resistance, flavor, etc.)


T

Tail Piping

Dripping e-liquid directly into a device and inhaling without using a drip tip.


Tank

Clearomisers with high-capacity containers designed to hold larger amounts of e-liquid.


Throat Hit

The sensation of vapor hitting the throat.


Tube Mod

A tube shaped e-cig, about the size of a small flashlight.


Tricks

Exhaling vapor in creative ways - O-rings, dragon breath (exhaling through nostrils), etc.


V

Vaporizer

Any device that produces vapor (instead of smoke).


Vapor Production

Refers to the amount of vapor produced.


Vape Tongue

Tongue coating created by some e-liquids. Interferes with tasting flavors.


VG (Vegetable Glycerin)

E-liquid ingredient that produces vapor.


Volt

Unit of electrical measurement.


W

Watt

Unit of electrical output.


Wick

Absorbs e-liquid and disperses it to the heating elements in a controlled manner to prevent flooding.


Z

Zero Nic

E-liquids with no nicotine.
